Before I started my life change I had considered weight loss surgery because nothing I had done seemed to work.  I looked at different options, took into consideration the different risks and how it would affect my future.  It seemed like the lap band was an option for me because it wasn’t as life threatening and is adjustable but I never followed through because the whole ordeal was just not for me.

After getting to this point in my new habits I just don’t agree with it.  Maybe I am not educated enough as to why people need it but I feel like your cheating yourself out of taking control of your health for the rest of your life.

Making a decision to do something life changing has reminded me that I am a bad ass b*tch!  Everything I have done up until now has been hard but nothing has been more empowering.  No one can can take that away from me and I am in control of what I want.

Do you think weight loss surgery is the easy way out or is there a bigger purpose than I’m seeing?

  1. I think there’s a stigma that comes with weight loss surgery, that everyone who has it is either too lazy to lose weight or just doesn’t want to commit themselves. But weight loss surgery can be just as time consuming as dieting and exercising. I think it’s a valuable option and definitely worth talking to your doctor about.

    Also, I love the cat picture 🙂

  2. I considered it once as well. It is not for me because it is a quick fix with temporary staying power. I think it is great for those who are in a life threatening position. Otherwise, it is best to work on it yourself. 🙂

  3. It is absolutely not the easy way out. You will have to work for every pound you lose like you have never worked for it before. The commitment to a lifetime change that you have to make is huge. And it is by no means a quick fix. All of that is an absolute and total myth, I can tell you that from experience. If you are looking for quick and easy, surgery is not the answer.

    I get the impression you are instead looking for something that works. First, I will tell you that surgery is not a guarantee. For some, yes it is temporary staying power. Depending on the type of surgery, the numbers of people losing half their excess weight and keeping it off long are from 50 to 85%. There’s not a diet out there that can boast anywhere close to 10%.

    If you’re serious about a long term change and ready to make some serious commitments to making that happen, surgery is a very legitimate option. The best way I’ve heard it put is what my doctor said: it levels the playing field so that diet and exercise can work for you. That’s what I’ve really seen come true for me. I still have a ways to go, I’ve lost 50 pounds since November, but it has been slow the past couple of month. But I’m able to get out and move like I haven’t been able to in years. I could barely walk at one point because of knee problems, now I’m training for a half marathon. So, for me, it was a definite yay and I don’t regret it one bit.
